The theme the website was using was very old. 12 years! In internet years, that’s ancient. The theme had officially reached end-of-life, meaning it was no longer supported by its developers and wasn’t receiving any updates or security patches. It was definitely time for an upgrade.
Continuing to use the outdated theme simply wasn’t an option. As web technologies evolve, older themes with outdated code eventually become incompatible with newer versions of WordPress, PHP, and modern browsers. Left unchanged, it was only a matter of time before the site would break — either visually, functionally, or both.
Just like any other kind of software, WordPress themes can become obsolete due to changes in technology, new security standards, and shifting design expectations. When a theme is no longer maintained, it stops receiving critical updates that keep the site secure, fast, and compatible with new tools and features.
Upgrading to a modern theme offers many benefits:
- Better mobile experience on phones and tablets
- Faster load times
- Improved security
- Greater stability with future WordPress and plugin updates
- Full compatibility with PHP 8, which brings major improvements in performance and security
Since this was a site for a non-profit hobby club, keeping costs low was a top priority. Instead of a complete redesign, the most budget-friendly option was to install and configure a modern replacement theme that closely matched the original look and feel. This approach preserved the site’s familiar style while delivering a much-needed technical upgrade — all without the higher cost of a full rebuild.
I think it looks great.
